Regional Health System Migrates 200TB Data Warehouse to Cloud

Service: Cloud Infrastructure

Result: 42% reduction in infrastructure spend

Summary

An aging on-premises data warehouse was approaching end-of-life, creating both cost and compliance risks. We executed a phased migration to Snowflake on AWS with zero reportable downtime.

The Challenge

The health system operated a 200TB on-premises Teradata warehouse with 1,400 downstream reports and a mix of SQL, SAS, and proprietary ETL jobs. HIPAA compliance requirements added strict requirements for encryption, audit logging, and data residency.

Our Solution

We performed a workload classification to prioritize migration waves, re-platformed SQL workloads to Snowflake using automated conversion tooling, rewrote SAS procedures in Python/Pandas, and implemented Terraform-managed infrastructure with encryption at rest and in transit across all data paths.

Outcomes

The migration completed in eight months with zero critical incidents. Annual infrastructure cost fell 42% versus on-premises TCO. The health system passed its subsequent HIPAA audit with no data-at-rest findings.
